Founded in 2008 by Deepinder Goyal and Pankaj Chaddah, Zomato is a restaurant search and discovery service. It currently operates in 23 countries, including India, Australia and the United States. It provides information and reviews on restaurants, including images of menus where the restaurant does not have its own website. The team gathers information from every restaurant on a regular basis to ensure their data is fresh. Their vast community of food lovers share their reviews and photos, so you have all that you need to make an informed choice.

However, as per the latest news foodtech startup Zomato has notified that over 17 million user records from its database were stolen recently. The information includes user email addresses and hashed passwords. Currently, the company claims to have over 120 million monthly user visits on its platform.

As per the post, Zomato’s security team discovered the breach recently. The statement reads,

“The hashed password cannot be converted/decrypted back to plain text – so the sanctity of your password is intact in case you use the same password for other services. But if you are paranoid about security like us, we encourage you to change your password for any other services where you are using the same password.”

However, to assure some relief to its users Zomato has confirmed that this data theft does not include payments-related information. Gunjan Patidar, Technology Chief at Zomato said,

“The payment-related information on Zomato is stored separately from this (stolen) data in a highly secure PCI Data Security Standard (DSS) compliant vault. No payment information or credit card data has been stolen/leaked.”

As a remedy, the company has reset the passwords for all affected users and logged them out of the app and website.
